The FAIL() call does not return, so the for-loop
increment is not executed causing the warning to
appear.

This simplifies most of the code.

The length was used only internaly and
can be computed on the fly. This makes the
cumbersome and errorprone update of the length
unnecessary.

Two parallel excavations starting at different times
